Brekky Club

We provide free breakfasts to students in the most disadvantaged suburbs of Logan City.

Why we do it:
A survey in 2001 showed that almost half of the students in a local high school went to school each day without having eaten any breakfast.

How we did it:
We consulted and liased with the principal and the Chaplaincy Committee and started this service one day per week.

What we provide:
Cereal, toast with spreads, and Milo or juice as the basics and fresh fruit (when available) served in a loving and non-discriminating manner.

Outcome:
The schools report much better teaching outcomes as the students are less disruptive and concentrated better. Absenteeism and truancy is markedly reduced on Brekky Club days.

Expansion:
We now provide this service two days per week in Loganlea and one day per week in Marsden, Woodridge and Kingston High Schools. We currently provide more than 3,000 meals per week.

Future development:
All these schools have requested that we provide this service five days per week.

Limitations:
We are limited only by finances and workers. All our workers are volunteers.

Cost:
When we last costed this outreach, we found it was more than $200 per day to service each school. (This is a calculated cost and does not take into account all the hours needed to set up, pack up, shop, etc) If we were to expand to 5 days per week in each high school, the cost would increase to over $4000 per week.

Our income is sourced from:
